“If you, then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give good things to those who ask him?” Matthew 7:11
June was my dad’s month – Father’s Day, his birthday – he even married a lady named June. (Their anniversary is in June.) So I’m dedicating one more post to him today.
Just before flying to St. Louis to join my father for his big 65th birthday celebration, I composed this poem during my morning run. I am now one year older than he was then – Where does the time go???
Happy Father’s Day, everyone.
To Dad
You told me that God was my Father; As a child I believed it was true. I wanted to know what this Father was like, So the man that I studied was you.
Your eyes were so warm and so merry; We laughed all the time as we played. And knowing that laughter’s created by God, He seemed not so stern as I prayed.
You punished sometimes; it was for my own good, And I knew that your love was still there. And knowing that’s God’s even wiser than you Makes suffering less hard to bear.
You gave much away, still we prospered, And it was then I decided That God’s wealth is different from that of the world – It’s multiplied as it’s divided.
And so, through twenty-nine wonderful years, I’ve seen what you told me was true. If one who is human can love me so much, I’m confident God loves me, too. I’ve seen with my own eyes that “God is Love.” I’ve seen His love living in you.

Wow, that is so beautiful and you have been so blessed. Thank you for sharing it and give your dad a hug for us, he deserves it. I also can’t help but think of how loving, patient and giving our Heavenly Father has been and being grateful for all that He is. Grace and blessings!

I would love to give my dad a hug, but that will have to wait. (See my last post, “That Passenger.”) I wrote this poem a long time ago, shortly after I turned 29… for the first time. 😉

The only “God” who calls Himself “Father” and acts it out in love. He continues to teach us dads daily how to be…dads. Lovely poem.

Not many are doubly blessed as you are. Some have neither; some only one or the other. I understand now more than I did when I was a child how much my earthly father loved me and cared for me. Thank you, Anne, for sharing your blessings. Hopefully, there will be one who will read and be drawn to our heavenly Father. Blessings and more blessings as we trust all to Him.

And you wrote this poem while out on a run? Wow–you are one gifted poet! Your dad and mine would have made great friends–they had a lot in common. Praise God for our good dads who modeled for us the goodness of our Heavenly Father!

Nice dedication to your father! To answer your question on my blog, my Lord’s Day went well, we finished Vacation Bible School today and had the job of taking down the decorations as well! So tired from teaching, leading and clean up!

Beautiful poem.. did it bring tears to your fathers eyes?

Oh yes. Every time he read it. And shared it. And saw it in the church bulletin on Father’s Day. And framed it and hung it in his house. And he’s probably got happy tears in his eyes now. 😉

It’s hard to find modern poems that I can love and enjoy. But they occasionally do find me. I hope you will enjoy this one as much as I have. And if you do, please thank the author. She did a great job.
